The role
We are looking for a chief executive who will lead a forward-thinking and ambitious city council with multi-million-pound economic development and regeneration plans, excellent services that improve the lives of our residents and the drive and commitment to deliver the aspirations of our city vision.

The city
Portsmouth is a historic and vibrant maritime city with an incredible waterfront and a rich cultural heritage, with 210,000 residents who are known for their pride in their coastal city.
It is a dynamic city that is home to the Royal Navy, a gold-rated university, the UK’s most successful council-owned port, a world-class historic dockyard and, of course, Portsmouth Football Club. We are renowned internationally for hosting the D-Day 75 commemorations, Victorious festival and an international kite festival, and for being the birthplace of Charles Dickens as well as the place that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle set Sherlock Holmes to solve his first mystery.
We are recognised as a global centre for marine, aerospace, defence, advanced manufacturing, and creative and digital industries, with a GVA of £5.65bn.
The council
We are a good performing council that is focused on the future. We have a strong city vision which sets out what kind of place Portsmouth wants to be by 2040 and what people in the city value and want to prioritise. We have a multi-million-pound economic development and regeneration programme under way to deliver these aspirations.
The LGA found us in 2021 to be a good council that is performing well, with innovative work and evidence of good performance across many key services and engagement with local communities. Our partnerships are strong, and we work with organisations, residents, communities and business to deliver the aspirations of the city vision.
